Later this year SpaceX will launch the first demonstration flight of their massive
Falcon Heavy rocket, which will be the largest space vehicle launched since the last time a
Saturn V was used way back in 1973. The Saturn V is what NASA used to
send us to the Moon, but Musk has a much more ambitious goal for the
Falcon Heavy. He claims that when properly equipped, it can bring
people to Mars and back again, without it having to be a one way trip.
With
a maximum payload of over 116,000 pounds, the Falcon heavy can lift
more than twice as much as other rockets like the Delta IV Heavy, the
European Ariane, or the Chinese Long March. It still falls well short of
the Saturn V's massive 260,000 payload, but I don't think they're
planning on launching any space golf carts for the Mars trip.
