Someday soon, we may be faced with the real possibility of reporting
to a robot boss, with no human overseer in sight. What's even more
unsettling is that we're likely already programmed to obey.
study carried out at the University of Manitoba's Human-Computer
Interaction (HCI) Lab discovered that subjects are willing to obey a
robot's commands, even when they thought these commands were
unreasonable. The test consisted of an 80-minute series of tasks,
designed to be more and more frustrating as time went on. Half of the
test subjects were seated in a room with a human "boss" while the other
half were greeted by a child-like NAO robot.
