Oldest Mall In America Gets Transformed Into 48 Low-Cost Micro-Apartments [Watch]

Who didn't dream of living in a mall when they were a kid? While the possibility is now a reality, it's a much more exciting prospect than it once may been, due to the fact that remodeling an unused structure is an intelligent use of resources and may benefit many people.

MyModernMet relays that The Arcade providence, located in Rhode Island, is America's oldest indoor shopping mall and went out of business in the late 20th century. Built in 1828 and popular for decades, it's been sitting empty for years.

For just $7 million, however, Northeast Collaborative Architects was able to remodel the mall into an apartment building with 48 low-cost micro-loft units.

The units start at just $550 and include a one-bedroom (225-800 sq ft.) space with a kitchen, full bath and shower, built-in bed, seating and storage. The prices and luxurious aspects go up from there.

Because the micro-lofts are designed for those who lead busy lifestyles, no stove is included in any unit. That's okay, though, because the mall has also been outfitted with 17 restaurants on the ground floor. In this regard, it really is like living in a shopping complex!

A shared laundry facility will ensure every tenant has clean, fresh-smelling clothes, and a bike storage room and parking garage are available for all residents to use.

Following are some photos of the unique mall-turned-apartment complex. Would you live here?
