Golfer eliminated from US Amateur after his caddie gets into the bunker to test the texture...

A golfer has been eliminated from the U.S. Amateur after his caddie violated official rules by testing the texture of sand on the 18th hole.

The incident occurred Thursday at the Bandon Dunes Golf Resort in Oregon during a round of 16 match between America's Tyler Strafaci and Argentina's Segundo Oliva Pinto.

The pair were tied when Pinto hit the ball into a greenside bunker, prompting his caddie, Brant Brewer, to step in and touch the sand with his fingers.

The United States Golf Association rules specifically prohibit players from taking that action, as it may give them information to help them with their next stroke.

The directive - Rule 12.2b in the official USGA book - also extends to a player's caddie - as Pinto found out the hard way.

Strafaci's caddie - his own father, Frank -  spotted Brewer brushing the sand and promptly called for officials.

It created a moment of high drama on the links, as Brewer denied he had bent down in the bunker to touch the sand - but the moment was caught on camera.

The violation cost Pinto the hole,  and therefore the match.

It sparked his elimination from the golf world's most prestigious amateur tournament.
