Obama Facing Looming Social Security Crisis

As Congress agonizes over health care, an even more daunting and dangerous challenge is bearing down: how to shore up Social Security to keep it from burying the nation ever deeper in debt.
What to do about mushrooming government payments as millions of baby boomers retire? How about a giant federal Ponzi scheme? That might work for a while.
But wait. That's pretty much the current system. Social Security takes contributions from today's workers and uses them to pay the old-age benefits that were promised to retirees. But there are serious concerns how long that can last.
President Barack Obama has said he'll tackle Social Security and related "entitlement" programs when the health care overhaul is resolved

Will Michigan Nullify Federal Gun Laws?
08-13-2009
•
Tenth Amendment Center
Introduced in the Michigan House on August 11, 2009, the “Firearms Freedom Act” (HB-5232) seeks “to make certain findings regarding intrastate commerce; to prohibit federal regulation of firearms, firearms accessories, and ammunition involved purely in intrastate commerce in [the State of Michigan]; to provide for certain exceptions to federal regulation; and to establish certain manufacturing requirements.”
The bill was authored by Rep. Phillip Pavlov and currently has 44 co-sponsors.
While the HB5232’s title focuses on federal gun regulations, it has far more to do with the 10th Amendment’s limit on the power of the federal government.

Tighter Cellphone Laws Might Face Static
08-12-2009

Washington Post
LaHood said he will convene a meeting Sept. 30 to formulate
"concrete steps . . . to make drivers think twice about taking their
eyes off the road for any reason."
LaHood is counting on frightening numbers -- cellphone use
is a factor in an estimated 342,000 auto accident injuries and costs
$43 billion each year in property damage, lost wages, medical bills and
loss of life -- to help win support.
"The public is sick and tired of people being distracted and causing accidents," he said last week.

U.S. hampers bid to clear Guantanamo detainee

Reuters
A U.S. military lawyer for a Kuwaiti detainee held at the American
prison at Guantanamo Bay charged the Obama administration
was hampering his efforts to clear his client's name.
Navy Lieutenant Commander Kevin Bogucki said the U.S. State
Department would not issue him clearance to travel on Friday to Kuwait,
where he planned to hold a news conference outlining the case involving
his client, Fouad Al Rabiah.

Dear Redflex,
While we know that your “sexy-mama” employees like to drink on the job, forge documents, and, well… go to federal prison, we have higher standards for you. Seriously. Stop making our job so easy, as you did today by posting this sign on the Loop 101 westbound just past Scottsdale Road:

Dirty Secret No. 1 in Obamacare
8/11/09
•
Town Hall
by Chuck Norris
Health care reforms are turning into health care revolts. Americans are turning up the heat on congressmen in town hall meetings across the U.S.
While watching these political hot August nights, I decided to research the reasons so many are opposed to Obamacare to separate the facts from the fantasy. What I discovered is that there are indeed dirty little secrets buried deep within the 1,000-plus page health care bill.

Robert Anglen, an "investigative reporter" at the Republic, sat on his keyboard and crapped out the following propaganda in reference to the NH man who showed up to the Obama appearance with a gun:
"The man who brought a gun to President Barack Obama's town hall meeting on Tuesday is a former Arizona resident with ties to an extreme right-wing group that calls for "resistance...against unconstitutional or illegal behavior by government officials."
William Kostric, 36, formerly of Scottsdale, stood outside the New Hampshire meeting on healthcare with a gun holstered at his thigh and holding a sign proclaiming that "it is time to water the tree of liberty."
The quote, often referenced by militia members and those in separatist movements, refers to Thomas Jefferson's famous call for vigilance: "The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of tyrants and patriots."
Records show that Kostric is a "tea

The controversial Department of Homeland Security (DHS) report Rightwing Extremism: Current Economic and Political Climate Fueling Resurgence in Radicalization and Recruitment
stirred criticism that the DHS had turned away from monitoring real
terrorism plots and was now labeling veterans, pro-life groups, and
limited government advocates as threats to national security. Consider
those fears vindicated.

Laredo man says Border Patrol agents abuse their authority
08-12-2009

Pro8News.com
Carlos Gonzalez says getting home to his ranch off highway 83 just
north of Laredo means having to battle border patrol agents. “It's just harassment in its purest form out there.” He says he's been tailgated and followed onto his property for no apparent reason, not once but twice this week. “This is the second time in four days, four days apart I’ve had these
incidents." He says this adds to a list of other instances over the
past few months. On Monday night he was even maced, after asking an agent to leave his property.

The Christian Science Monitor says: The war on drugs needs a timeout
08-12-2009
•
Christian Science Monitor
Before Washington ramps up yet another losing war on drugs, it should take a clear-eyed look at how its current strategies are affecting the supply and demand of drugs. Congressman Eliot Engel (D) of New York has introduced a bill to do just that.
Washington would be wise to back Congressman Engel's initiative because there has not been a thorough, frank evaluation of the fight against drugs in decades. The drug czar office's annual report is not enough. Recommendations by an independent commission, however, could generate the consensus and strategy we sorely need.

No Third Solution
First it was the broken-window debacle known formally as CARS, or colloquially as “Cash For Clunkers”: by Government edict, thousands of functioning vehicles were destroyed with sodium silicate. Adding insult to injury, the vehicles (parts of which were ostensibly salvageable) will be scrapped. Thanks to CARS, the replacement driver-side door that you neede for your 1995 whatchamacallit is going to be a little bit harder to find. The market for used cars, and the market for replacement/salvage parts just got a little bit thinner, so prices go up a little bit more.
And then there is agriculture, which has been silently (but openly) engaging in what can only be described as price-fixing. It’s been said elsewhere, but I’ll repeat it: if any other industry openly flaunted it’s price-fixing policies (Big Oil, anyone?) it would quickly draw the ire of politicians, bloggers, and Joe Six-Packs everywhere. Everyone would be in an uproar over “price gouging”. But I’ve heard nary a whisper abou

The Screwing of the Average Investor

Economic Policy Journal
Probably one of the best ways for an average to small investor to participate in the ecommodities markets is through exchange traded funds. By using ETF's you can limit your risk and trade with small sums.
So what is the government up to? Changing rules in a manner that will make it difficult for commodity ETF's to operate.
