"IHS" is NOT a symbol for the name "Jesus." It stands for In Hoc Signo, which is Latin for "In This Sign." It represents the vision The Emperor Constantine purportedly saw that converted him to a sort of secular "Christainity." While it's pretty clear that he never really had the experience called being born again, he had a dream or vision that contained the symbol of the Cross and the words, "In This Sign You Will Conquer." When he used the cross symbol in battle, he won, a highly questionable sort of Christianity. The three letters, with the cross, became the symbol for the Catholic Church, which was founded not by Peter, but by Constantine. It is not, nor ever was, a symbol for the name of Jesus, which, by the way, was not the Savior's name, which was YHSVH, or Yeshuvah.
