Understanding the unemployment rate: It’s not 8.3%

What we read, see on TV and hear on radio about the unemployment rate is not the whole story. The Bureau of Labor Statistics gives us "U-3," which is at 8.3%, but to see total unemployment including those who have stopped looking for jobs, the answer lies in "U-6."
