Inside the Factory Building the World's Smallest, Cheapest Private Jet

After more than a decade in development, Cirrus Aircraft has finally begun delivering its new SF50 Vision Jet to the first of more than 600 customers who've queued up for it. The curvy v-tailed airplane is both the smallest and, at $2 million, the most affordable private jet in the world. (Even used Gulfstream jets go for tens of millions of dollars.)

The Vision Jet can haul five adults up to 1,150 miles at 28,000 feet, while cruising at 345 mph—good enough to get from New York to Miami in about three hours. And despite its diminutive size and modest price tag, it offers a slew of innovations. It's the only private jet to be built entirely out of carbon fiber, the only jet with a whole-plane parachute in case of emergencies, and the only single-engine private jet on the market, which keeps operating costs low.

It also happens to be fun to fly and a gorgeous piece of design. Click through the gallery above to see how Cirrus brings each one to life at its plants in Grand Forks, North Dakota and Duluth, Minnesota.
