Czarist America

Just a Girl in Short Shorts
Barack Obama has now established more czars than there were in the three hundred year history of imperial Russia. At best these are a colossal waste of money and unnecessary level of bureaucracy. But worse, they are designed to consolidate executive power and do an end run around the constitution

MONSTER BILL THAT WOULD HAVE SPAWNED NAFTA SUPERHIGHWAY DEAD
6/07/09
•
American Free Press
Texans who oppose the Trans-Texas Corridor, the conversion of freeways to toll ways, and foreign ownership and tolling of U.S. highways in Texas were outraged over the back-room deals that almost led to the passage of House Bill 300, a massive bill that would have unleashed the Texas Department of Transportation to continue pursuing broad development of the TTC and other projects that could pave over the people’s property rights.

Obama's Muslim Campaign

Townhall.com
If it ain't broke, the saying goes, don't fix it. And so it was that the Muslim world got to hear the 2009 version of Barack Obama's 2004 Democratic convention speech. In the first rendition before a swarm of fellow party members, though aimed at a national audience, Obama assured Americans that we are not a nation of Red States and Blue States.

On D-Day Google honors video game's anniversary

Worldnet Daily
With the world's eyes turned to Normandy as President Obama and European leaders honor the sacrifice of Allied soldiers on June 6, 1944, Internet giant Google chose to honor this 65th anniversary of D-Day by memorializing the birth of a video game. (Publisher: Interesting message. I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't on purpose to make a point. I'm interested in what that point might be)

Space 2.X: The Private Rocket Race Takes Off
06-06-2009
•
Wired
HAWTHORNE, California " Building a successful startup in Silicon
Valley is hard, but it’s not rocket science. Unless you’re SpaceX.
Eschewing the traditional startup trappings of two college grads eating ramen, watching Adult Swim
and coding until the wee hours of the night, SpaceX instead employs
hundreds of brainiacs and builds its rockets in a massive hangar that
once housed a 747 fuselage factory.
Started in 2002 by PayPal founder Elon Musk, SpaceX (short for Space
Exploration Technologies Corporation) brings a startup mentality to
launching rockets into orbit, which until recently was almost
exclusively government turf. The hope is that minimal bureaucracy,
innovation and in-house manufacturing and testing can be used to put
payloads into space at roughly one-tenth the cost of traditional
methods.
If the company’s newest rocket, the Falcon 9,
successfully completes its two scheduled launches this year, it will

Oil spikes above $70 for first time this year
06-06-2009
•
MSNBC
“There’s this feeling of ’here we go again’ with what happened last year,” Kloza said. “It hurts discretional spending. It leaves people to think about not taking those summer vacations.”
Gas prices added another 2 cents overnight, climbing to their highest level in more than seven months to $2.592 a gallon, according to auto club AAA, Wright Express and Oil Price Information Service. A gallon of gas costs 48.2 cents more than it did a month ago, but it’s $1.397 cheaper than last year.
This week, Goldman Sachs revised its forecast and predicted that oil would rally to $85 a barrel by the end of the year as the economy stabilizes and OPEC production cuts take hold.
The forecast assumes, however, that the Or

China explores buying $50bn in IMF bonds
06-06-2009
Friday’s statement by China said any investment would be made
according to its usual criteria of “safety and reasonable returns”, but
made no mention of Beijing’s wish for more power in IMF
decision-making, in return for financial support.
Safe, which
controls almost $2,000bn of China’s foreign exchange reserves, added it
was ready to help the IMF explore more ways to raise finance.
Mr
Lipsky said the Chinese and Russian proposals were part of a commitment
made during the London G20 summit in April to augment IMF resources by
$500bn, and that the IMF “absolutely welcomes” the commitments.

9th Circuit Rules in Favor of JPL Employees Regarding Intrusive Background Investigations
06-05-2009
•
Spaceref.com
Today, the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled against the federal
government in favor of employees at NASA's Jet Propulsion
Laboratory in the matter of Homeland Security Presidential Directive #12.
One of the matters of considerable interest to the judges
pertained to the demand by Caltech that every JPL employee
'voluntarily' agree to submit to an open ended background
investigation in order to receive
an ID badge compliant with HSPD#12. The government
argued there were no limits to the extent of the investigation. If
an employee refused to 'volunteer', Caltech would terminate the
employee.
