The world’s largest science and engineering fair announced its winners Friday, with the three top winners walking away with big educational scholarships. Nineteen-year-old Ionut Budisteanu took the top prize ($75, 000) for his creation of affordable self-driving car technology. Google has been working on a self-driving car since 2010, and Budisteanu wanted to challenge their invention. He set out to create something that would work in a similar fashion but be much more affordable to the average driver.

The most expensive thing from the Google self-driving car is the high resolution 3-D radar, so I was thinking how I could remove it,” Budisteanu told NBC News.
