Washington, of course, has no intention of obeying any popular referendum. Yet it wishes to avoid the political embarrassment of a broad repudiation of its occupation of the oil-rich country. “American diplomats are quietly lobbying the government not to hold the referendum,” the New York Times notes. The US has long justified its invasion and occupation of Iraq—which has resulted in the deaths of well over 1 million Iraqis and made refugees out of millions more—as a selfless exercise in building “democracy.” ....
SEOUL, South Korea — North Korea responded Saturday to new U.N. sanctions by defiantly vowing to press forward with the production of nuclear weapons and take "resolute military actions" against international efforts to isolate it.
In a statement on the North's official Korean Central News Agency, an unidentified spokesman for the North Korean Foreign Ministry was quoted as saying that his nation would continue its nuclear program to defend itself against what he called a hostile U.S. policy.
Iraq: “There is mounting evidence that veterans may be ill — and some may have actually died — as a result of exposure to dangerous toxins produced by the pits,” Rep. Tim Bishop, D-N.Y., said in a statement. Bishop co-sponsored the bill with Rep. Carol Shea-Porter, D-N.H.

Construction of a $30 million dining facility at a U.S. base in Iraq is
scheduled to be completed Dec. 25. But the decision to build it was
based on bad planning and botched paperwork. The project is too far
along to stop, making the mess hall a future monument to the waste and
inefficiency plaguing the war effort, according to an independent panel
investigating contracting in Iraq and Afghanistan.
The U.S. military is stepping up training and reviewing target sets in case the North Koreans decide to go to war.
As we learned last week, North Korea looks to be prepping for another long-range missile test, and South Korea has reportedly outlined plans to strike back if North Korea targets its warships. The U.S. military is also preparing for the worst; Aviation Week ace reporters Amy Butler and Dave Fulghum have an excellent rundown of stepped-up military preparations in the event North Korea follows through on its belligerent rhetoric.
As well as anyone, Edward Said understood the West's long-standing
antipathy to Islam - reflected in Samuel Huntington's "The Clash of
Civilizations" article in the summer 1993 issue of Foreign Affairs and
later a 1996 book.
He wrote that future conflicts won't be "primarily ideological
or primarily economic. The great divisions among humankind and the
dominating source of conflict will be cultural....the principal
conflicts of global politics will occur between nations and groups of
different civilizations. The clash of civilizations will dominate
global politics. The fault lines between civilizations will be the
battle lines of the future" - demagogically suggesting a benevolent,
superior West confronting a belligerent, hostile, inferior Muslim
world. In other words, good v. evil.

Address to Muslims used Islamic text urging war against nonbelievers In his major address to the Muslim world last week, President Obama quoted a verse from the Quran that is interpreted as urging Muslims to follow Muhammad in waging jihad against nonbelievers.
The context of the verse – first noticed by Robert Spencer of the Jihad Watch website – was confirmed by Quranic experts contacted by WND.
With the world's eyes turned to Normandy as President Obama and European leaders honor the sacrifice of Allied soldiers on June 6, 1944, Internet giant Google chose to honor this 65th anniversary of D-Day by memorializing the birth of a video game. (Publisher: Interesting message. I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't on purpose to make a point. I'm interested in what that point might be)
Worried by their prospects in the House, Democrats postponed final action on a nearly $100 billion wartime spending bill until next week so as to buy more time for talks among lawmakers and the return of President Barack Obama from overseas.
The mother of football star Pat Tillman, who was killed by friendly fire in 2004 but whose fratricide was deliberately kept from the public and his family, says a general’s testimony to Congress is yet another lie by a military officer about her son’s death.
Testifying in his confirmation hearing as Obama’s new commander for Afghanistan, Lt. Gen. Stanley McChrystal said he “didn’t see any activity by anyone to deceive” the public about the circumstances of Tillman’s death. The death was first reported as a result of enemy fire; Tillman was held up as a hero and quickly received the Silver Star.
McChrystal personally helped expedite Tillman’s Silver Star award, even though he later acknowledged he had “suspicions” that the ex-NFL star had been killed by his own men.
CNN reports that Tillman’s mother says McChrystal knew at the memorial service that her son died from friendly fire.
President Barack Obama's choice to take charge of the war in Afghanistan called "significant growth" of the Afghan army and national police the key to his strategy, but the annual cost of building and maintaining the existing Afghan force is more than four times larger than the entire Afghan economy.
America has agreed to sell "bunker-buster" bombs to South Korea capable of destroying underground facilities in North Korea. The laser-guided GBU-28 bombs were first used in 1990 during the Gulf War to destroy underground command centres in Iraq.
The report represents the clearest American acknowledgment of fault in connection with the attacks. It will give new ammunition to critics, including many Afghans, who complain that American forces too often act indiscriminately in calling in airstrikes, jeopardizing the United States mission by turning the civilian population against American forces and their ally, the Afghan government.
Watching retired Gen. Colin Powell refer to the parable of the Good Samaritan during Sunday’s Memorial Day ceremonies on the Mall in Washington, it struck me that Powell was giving hypocrisy a bad name.
US soldiers from the 101st Airborne Division gang raped a 14 year old Iraqi girl and murdered her and her family —including a 5 year old child. An additional soldier was involved in the cover-up.
Sheik Habih Shawqi Hamakan peered through his binoculars on a recent afternoon at a sight he considers, despite the rising columns of black smoke that blot out the sun, pure beauty.
[so why object to their release?] The Pentagon denied a British newspaper report that photographs of Iraqi prisoner abuse, whose release U.S. President Barack Obama wants to block, include images of apparent rape and sexual abuse.

The Senate passed a $91.3 billion military spending bill, shorn of money President Barack Obama wants to close the Guantanamo Bay prison but allowing him to significantly ramp up the U.S. war in Afghanistan.
